Romanian Government Postpones COVID-19 Relaxation Measures

The Romanian Government was supposed to announce new relaxation measures from July the 1st. Among them, some measures would refer to the hospitality industry, extremely affected in Romania and worldwide.

Instead, PM Ludovic Orban, along with president Klaus Iohannis, will announce the economy relaunching plan. The event takes place on Wednesday, July 1. The irony of it all is that the Romanian president declared, during the lock down measures, that his government don’t have to take relaunching measures, as they have never stopped the economy.

The Romanian Government decided to postpone the new relaxation measures as the number of the COVID-19 infected persons increased lately. On the other hand, the Opposition accused the Government of creating artificial statistics and use them only to their political benefit.

On top of that, the Romanian authorities stopped a COVID-19 mass testing in Bucharest. Until it was stopped, 4,600 Bucharest city dwellers were tested, in just 2 days. The results are astonishing: only 4 of them tested positive for COVID-19, which hugely contradict the official statistics.

The Government’s postponing of the relaxation measures keeps unemployed more than 500,000 Romanians, most of them from the hospitality industry, but not only. The Romanian Ministry of Labor stopped publishing the unemployment situation more than a month ago, being accused by the Opposition of hiding the real figures for fear the governing party would lose political confidence among population.
