Southern Romanian Under Yellow Alert for Snowstorms and Freezing Temperatures

Southern Romania is currently experiencing its coldest week of the winter, with heavy snowfall and temperatures plummeting as low as -20°C. The southern and southeastern regions of the country, including Bucharest, are under a Yellow Alert due to these severe weather conditions.

Weather Warnings and Affected Areas

Authorities have issued a Yellow Code for the counties of Călărași, Constanța, Giurgiu, Ialomița, Ilfov (including Bucharest), and Teleorman. This alert is in effect until Tuesday morning, February 18.

  • Snowfall: Snow accumulation is expected to reach between 10 and 20 cm in the affected regions.
  • Wind: Strong winds, with gusts up to 45 km/h, will cause drifting snow and make travel difficult.
  • Temperatures: will drop significantly, with potential lows of -10°C in the south and even -20°C in mountainous areas.

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) indicates that the cold weather episode is likely to persist until at least February 24-25. Meteorologists suggest that February 2025 could be one of the coldest on record, contrasting sharply with February 2024, which was the warmest.

Traffic conditions are challenging throughout the country, particularly in areas under weather warnings. Road workers are actively working to maintain highways with equipment and anti-skid materials.

Elena Mateescu, the director of ANM, stated that the week ahead would be very cold, with frosty nights and mornings, making it the coldest week of the 2024-2025 winter. She also cautioned about the potential for temperatures approaching -20°C in mountainous areas.

Valahia News urges residents and travellers to stay informed and take necessary precautions during this period of severe weather.
