Eurostat: Romania’s Population Projected to Decline

The latest Eurostat report on population projection shows that Romania is one of the European countries where the population will decrease drastically. Romania will have a steep decline in its population in both urban and rural areas. The country is clearly missing a demographic strategy and the Romanian people to live in the country by 2050 will be around 16 million inhabitants instead of 21 million as it is today.

In fact, Romania is the 4th in the European Union when it comes to the decline of the population in the urban areas and on 4th when it comes to the rural areas decline.

Not all the states will witness their population declining, though. Malta, Ireland, and Sweden are among the states where the urban population will increase. Malta’s urban population is projected to grow by 35.4%, Ireland’s by 29.2%, while Sweden’s by 25.1%. Meanwhile, the rural population will grow in just 4 member states: Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, and Belgium.

Romania is far from such an optimistic scenario, but on the contrary, its population is projected to decline. According to Eurostat, the member states where the urban population is going to diminish are Latvia (-17.7%), Greece (-16.7%), Poland (-10.3%), and Romania (-8.6%).

Moreover, Romania is among the member states where the rural population will be in decline until 2050, with a decrease of 25%. The other European states are Lithuania (-43.5%), Latvia (-37.6%), and Bulgaria (-26.8%).
