Romania’s People’s Salvation Cathedral: The World’s Largest Orthodox Church Ushers in a New Spiritual Era

On October 26, 2025, Bucharest’s skyline was forever transformed with the consecration of Romania’s People’s Salvation Cathedral, now recognised as the largest Orthodox church in the world. After 15 years of dedicated construction, this grand cathedral stands as a towering testament to Romania’s enduring Orthodox faith and national pride.

The service was led by Patriarch Daniel of Romania and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople, emphasising the cathedral’s significance not only as a house of worship but also as a symbol of unity, faith, and Romanian resilience. This milestone event coincided with the centenary of the Romanian Patriarchate and 140 years since the Romanian Orthodox Church received autocephaly.

Rising to an impressive 134 meters, the cathedral is not only the tallest Eastern Orthodox church in the world but also ranks as the third-tallest domed church worldwide. Covering some 6,000 square meters and boasting a massive volume of 323,000 cubic meters, it comfortably accommodates up to 5,000 worshippers, making it the largest by area and capacity in the Orthodox Christian world.

Inside, visitors are greeted by the world’s most extensive collection of church mosaics — an astonishing 25,000 square meters of intricate religious art — and the most significant Orthodox iconostasis, soaring to 17 meters. The cathedral’s dome dominates the skyline, with an internal height of 106 meters and an external peak of 121 meters, surpassing all other Orthodox domes. Adding to its grandeur, the cathedral houses a monumental free-swinging bell weighing 25.2 tons, the largest of its kind.

More than an architectural marvel, the People’s Salvation Cathedral represents a spiritual beacon for Romania. Its consecration coincided with the centenary of the Romanian Patriarchate and with the celebration of 140 years since the Romanian Orthodox Church achieved independence. For thousands of believers, this sacred space emphasises renewal, faith, and unity after decades marked by historical challenges, including wars and communist suppression.

The construction, funded primarily by public donations and investments totalling approximately €270 million, has transformed Bucharest’s religious landscape. Situated near the Palace of Parliament, the cathedral is not only a place of worship but a key symbol of Romanian identity and Orthodox heritage. It is welcomed by a diverse gathering of clergy, officials, and faithful.

As the largest Orthodox cathedral in the world, Romania’s People’s Salvation Cathedral is set to become a significant spiritual hub, attracting pilgrims and visitors from across the globe. It stands as a proud emblem of Romania’s cultural continuity and Orthodox Christian devotion, inspiring future generations to embrace their rich spiritual roots.
