U.S. State Department Approves Sale of 32 F-35 Fighter Jets to Romania

The U.S. State Department has approved a significant arms deal with Romania, allowing for the potential sale of 32 F-35 fighter jets, along with engines and additional equipment, valued at approximately $7.2 billion.

This announcement was made on September 13, 2024, and marks a significant step in Romania’s efforts to modernize its military capabilities amid rising security concerns in Eastern Europe. Lockheed Martin will serve as the primary contractor for this deal, including 33 engines supplied by Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of RTX.

The acquisition is part of Romania’s broader strategy to enhance its defence posture, particularly in light of ongoing tensions with Russia. The first deliveries of these advanced aircraft are expected to occur by 2031.

Romania’s Supreme Council of National Defense influenced its decision to procure the F-35s. The council emphasized the need for advanced military capabilities to ensure national security and regional stability.
