Romania Could Offer One Patriot Missile System to Ukraine

Romania could offer one Patriot Missile System to Ukraine. This was implied by how Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis answered journalists’ questions after meeting US President Joe Biden in Washington. However, the matter should be discussed and approved by the Romanian Council for National Defense – CSAT.

There is a functional Patriot system that will remain in Romania. The discussion concerns the others in advanced operationalization phases: “It was about one of these,” Iohannis confirmed.

On the other hand, he also looked concerned about Romania’s anti-aircraft defense.

There is obviously a need for air defense systems in Ukraine, advanced systems, and so in the last few weeks, there has been quite a lot of discussion about who can provide Patriot systems to Ukraine. Romania has such systems, and then we were certainly asked to. And President Biden brought this matter up, and I said that I was open to discussing these matters, which means that I will have to discuss it at home, in the CSAT (Supreme Council for National Deense), let’s see how we can solve the problem, what we can offer and obviously what we can we receive instead because it is, in my opinion, unacceptable for Romania to remain without anti-aircraft defense.

Klaus Iohannis on Romania offering a Patriot System to Ukraine

Global Patriot™ Solutions is an anti-missile defence system consisting of radar, command and control technology and multiple types of interceptors, all working together to detect, identify and neutralize tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones, advanced aircraft and other threats.

Patriot is the basis of the anti-aircraft and anti-missile defence of 18 countries.

It is manufactured by the U.S. defence contractor Raytheon and derives its name from the radar component of the weapon system. The AN/MPQ-53 at the heart of the system is known as the “Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target,” a backronym for “Patriot.”
