The European Commission Launched “Re-open EU” Platform For Tourists

The European Commission has launched a web platform called Re-open EU, dedicated to supporting the safe resumption of travel and tourism across Europe and which will provide real-time information on borders and the availability of transport and tourism services in the Member States. This platform will be available in all 24 official EU languages.

Thus, through responsible and informed decisions, Europeans will be able to plan their summer holidays and longer trips taking into account the persistent risks associated with coronavirus.

The platform is part of the European Commission’s tourism and transport package of 13 May 2020, launched to restore the confidence of EU travelers and to support the resumption of European tourism safely and in compliance with the necessary health precautions. The new platform, which also comes with a mobile version (web application), is a key milestone for travelers in the EU, as it centralizes up-to-date information from the Commission and Member States.

Through the “Re-open EU”, the Commission also provides relevant information on tourism offers in different Member States, including EU actions such as European Capitals of Smart Tourism, European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) and European Capitals of Culture. In addition, the platform also contains information on voucher sponsorship, which allows consumers to show their support for their favorite hotels or restaurants by buying accommodation or meal vouchers after the reopening of these units, to help the hotel industry in Europe.

On 11 June 2020, the Commission presented its recommendations on the partial and gradual lifting of travel restrictions in the EU after 30 June and called on the Member States to lift restrictions on free movement and internal border controls by 15 June, with a view to improving the health situation in the EU and the implementation by the Member States of physical restraint and other health measures.
