Simona Halep Pulls Out of Palermo Tournament

Palermo Ladies Open shouldn’t be a problem for Simona Halep, no. 2 WTA, who was decided to start strong after the pandemic lockdown. Yet, the decision of the Italian authorities, who ruled that all the Romanians and Bulgarians entering Italy must stay in mandatory quarantine for 14 days, made her withdraw from the Palermo tennis tournament.

On Sunday, July 26, Simona Halep announced her withdrawal on her Twitter account:

Given the recent rise in Covid19 cases in Romania and my anxieties around international air travel at this time, I have made the tough decision to withdraw from Palermo. I want to thank the tournament director and the Italian ministry of health for all efforts on my behalf

The organizers of the tournament tried until the very last to get an exception from the Italian Ministry of Health and they were very optimistic about getting one, not only for Simona, but also for all the other tennis players from Romania who announced their participation. Unfortunately, Simona decided to pull out and her next tournament is the one from Prague, in August.
