Romania’s finance minister wants prison sentences for those who fail to pay their taxes to the state

A draft law submitted to the Senate by Eugen Teodorovici, the Minister of Finance, involves prison sentences for those who do not pay on time the contributions withheld from salaries, royalties and other incomes. Eugen Teodorovici proposes that Romanians who withhold or collect and then do not pay to the state contributions and taxes can be sentenced to prison for periods between 1 and 6 years.

Similar penalties would be received by those who break the law by not collecting or withholding taxes and contributions within 30 days of the due date. In the appendix of the project it is specified that it is, among other things, about the tax on dividends, on wages, pensions, leases, independent activities, intellectual property rights, contributions to health insurance.

“My proposal aims at a fair and honest treatment from the employer to the employee, avoiding any form of abuse and by no means such as those supported by the contestants of this measure.” wrote Eugen Teodorovici.
