A controversial statement of the top Moldovan epidemiologist generated a political scandal in the Republic of Moldova. While being invited in a TV Show for TVR Moldova, Nicolae Furtuna, the director of the Moldovan National Agency for Public Health said:
„I don’t want to be misinterpreted and to look like a cynical person, but all over the world COVID-19 took the lives of those who were already a burden for themselves and for everybody else around them“.

The Moldovan official was immediately summoned by the Moldovan PM, Ion Cucu. After the meeting, Nicolae Furtuna resigned from his position.
According to statistics, Republic of Moldova reported 40,556 cases of persons infected with COVID-19 and 1,087 deaths so far.
