In 2023, Romanians spent 8.5 billion euros on holidays abroad, an increase of 15% compared to the previous year and 60% more than the level of the reference year 2019, according to ZF calculations based on data from the BNR last year.
The BNR indicators reflect the growing appetite for trips abroad. Romanians took out 3 billion euros more than the reference year 2019.
However, the tourism deficit deepened to 3.9 billion euros last year, and the amount left by foreigners in the country remains far below that spent by Romanians abroad.
Romanians are increasingly seeking experiences abroad, with travel expenditure reaching a new record. This surge in spending reflects a growing desire for exploration and a return to normalcy following the pandemic’s restrictions.
While pinpointing the exact average cost of a trip is challenging due to varying factors like travel style, destination, and duration, the increased expenditure in 2023 suggests a rise in average spending per trip compared to previous years.
Europe remains the preferred destination for Romanians, likely due to its proximity and accessibility, with many opting for car travel over flying. However, Africa has emerged as a surprising second favourite, showcasing a growing interest in diverse travel experiences.
Popular Destinations Beckon Romanian Travelers:
- Europe: With its rich cultural tapestry and historical landmarks, European destinations like Italy, France, and Spain consistently rank high on the list. These countries offer a variety of experiences, from bustling cityscapes to scenic countryside escapes.
- Africa: Africa’s vast and diverse continent is attracting more Romanian tourists, particularly those seeking adventure and unique cultural encounters. Popular destinations include Morocco, Egypt, and South Africa.
- Other: Beyond these top contenders, regions like the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas also see increased interest from Romanian travellers, highlighting their thirst for global exploration.
Unveiling the Reasons Behind the Travel Boom
Several factors contribute to the rise in Romanian travel expenditure:
- Improved Economic Conditions: A growing economy empowers Romanians to allocate more resources towards leisure activities like travel.
- Affordable Travel Options: The emergence of budget airlines and online travel platforms has made international travel more accessible and cost-effective.
- Shifting Priorities: Romanians increasingly prioritize experiences over material possessions, leading to increased travel spending.
