Google Launches Features to Support Ukrainian Refugees

In the context of the invasion of Ukraine, which resulted in a humanitarian crisis, Google has launched an SOS alert feature on Search available in Ukraine since the beginning of the war.

How does SOS alert work?

The Google update is specially designed for Ukrainians fleeing to other countries to find refuge. When individuals search for refugee and evacuation information, they will get a notice that directs them to United Nations refugee resources. In the coming time, more data from specialized organizations will be included.

Those in need can also look out for refugee and migration facilities in Ukraine’s neighbouring countries, such as Romania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, using Google Maps. Google has added over 100 refugee centres to Google Maps in various nations, with over 15 in Romania, based on authoritative sources in the field, including local authorities. Google Maps has been updated with new features for refugees

Google has designed new ways for businesses to indicate that they are offering refugee services in response to the growing number of refugees. As a result, hotels in Ukraine’s surrounding countries can specify whether they offer lodging discounts or free refugee accommodation in their company profiles. In addition, any company can now specify in its Search or Maps profile what aid it provides to Ukrainian refugees, such as giving free services or products, distributing donations, hiring refugees, providing legal assistance, or providing free transportation. Another option for businesses is to include letters that explain how refugees may help.

Poland, Romania, Moldova, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic all have recommendations for enterprises located near Ukraine. Google advises business owners to have up-to-date information available to customers, such as schedules and contact information, and use Google Translate to create Ukrainian ads for migrants who are likely unfamiliar with the local language. Plus, they can translate a conversation in real-time using Google Translate.

Romania is one of the countries to help the Ukrainian refugees on a large scale. Thousands of individuals and businesses support the Ukrainian refugees arriving in Romania, from offering accommodation, food and shelter but also by providing jobs. No less than 3,000 refugees are already hired in Romania, and their number is expected to grow.
