Fire At The Infectious Diseases Hospital Constanta – 9 Covid Patients Dead At ICU

On Friday, October 1st, a fire broke out at the intensive care unit of the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Constanța. The red intervention scenario strategy has been put into action. In a spectacular rescue effort, patients were handled out the window to the saviors. Cseke Attila, the temporary Minister of Health, confirmed that there are deceased individuals, but did not specify how many.

The head of IGSU Constanța, Constantin Amarandei, declared that nine out of ten patients who were in the ATI Covid ward died and that they were found in bed.

He said no casualties were found in other areas of the hospital.

Amarandei added that in February there was a check at all medical units, especially those that provided Covid support, that no irregularities were found and no sanctions were applied.

A criminal case has been opened for manslaughter.

The case will be investigated by the prosecutors from the Prosecutor’s Office of the Constanța Court.

Police and criminals left Bucharest for Constanța, where they will investigate with Constanta prosecutors. They will do research on the spot and take samples. Medical devices will be lifted for expertise to see if it was a technical malfunction or a human error.

The fire occurred at the level of the ICU department with COVID patients, the source reported.

The entire hospital was evacuated. All the hospitals in the county were pre-alerted to take over the patients.

At 09.53, the Red Intervention Plan was activated. The fire was extinguished at 10:55.

Ambulances were sent to the scene to pick up the patients. Each patient will be evaluated according to their health and the possible consequences of this fire. An attempt is being made to find a place for each of these patients in other hospitals.

Firefighters from IGSU Constanța are on the spot with an escalator to put out the fire and to save the people who are in the medical unit.

THIS IS THE THIRD MAJOR FIRE IN ROMANIAN HOSPITALS DURING PANDEMIC

This is not the first time when the Romanian hospitals host this type of tragedy. In November 2020, there were 10 dead at one hospital in Piatra Neamt, following an explosion at the COVID-19 intensive care unit.

Also, the tragedy repeated in January, in Bucharest this time, when 19 patients died in the fire that broke out in the morning, at 5 o clock AM, at Matei Bals hospital.

This is the third one. Again, with deaths. Again, the Romanian authorities were unprepared for preventing this sort of tragedy from happening.

This is the sad reality in a country caught in three different crises: political, economic, and social.
