Gheorghe Hagi Appointed Romania National Team Coach

Romanian football legend Gheorghe Hagi has officially taken the helm as head coach of Romania’s national football team, marking his return to the role after 25 years. The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) confirmed the appointment, following talks initiated by FRF president Răzvan Burleanu.

Contract and Objectives

Hagi signed a four-year deal aimed at steering Romania towards qualification for the 2028 European Championship, hosted across England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. This comes after Mircea Lucescu’s tenure ended with a heartbreaking World Cup playoff defeat to Turkey. Hagi’s immediate focus will be on rebuilding team morale and integrating young talents from his Viitorul Constanța academy.

The 61-year-old icon, celebrated for his 125 caps and stints at Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Galatasaray—where he won the UEFA Cup—brings unmatched experience. He previously coached the national team briefly in 2001 and led Farul Constanța to domestic success.

Hagi’s commanding presence, as captured in this iconic image, symbolises hope for a revival reminiscent of Romania’s golden 1990s era under coach Anghel Iordănescu.

Fan Reactions and Challenges Ahead

Supporters have rallied behind “Regele” (The King), viewing his passion and tactical acumen as key to overcoming recent inconsistencies. After turning down the role in 2024 to prioritise club duties, Hagi now steps up amid high expectations. His first competitive tests will blend academy prospects with seasoned players, targeting a return to major tournaments.

This appointment revives optimism for Romanian football, with Hagi’s leadership poised to inspire the Tricolorii towards continental glory.
