Russian Drone Enters Romanian Air Space, Two F-16 in Pursuit

On September 13, 2025, Romania’s air defence forces responded swiftly to an unprecedented security incident when a Russian drone intruded into Romanian airspace near the Ukrainian border. The Romanian Air Force scrambled two F-16 fighter jets to intercept the drone, which was detected approximately 20 kilometres southwest of Chilia Veche, Tulcea County.

The F-16 jets tracked the drone until it disappeared from radar, ensuring no invasion of populated areas and preventing any public safety threat. Residents in northern Tulcea County were alerted through an emergency RO-Alert system, advising calm and urging them to contact emergency services only if necessary.

Defence Minister Ionuț Mosteanu underscored Romania’s firm stance against violations of its airspace, affirming that any unauthorised drone incursions will be met with decisive action, including being shot down if necessary. He emphasised that Romanian defence forces maintain permanent coordination with NATO, reinforcing collective security measures amid ongoing regional tensions.

This incident comes amid increased drone activity linked to the conflict in Ukraine, with neighbouring Poland and Romania elevating air defence alerts to counter these aerial threats effectively. The prompt response by the Romanian Air Force reflects the country’s readiness to safeguard its sovereignty and the security of its citizens against evolving aerial threats.

Romanian authorities continue to closely monitor the situation, preparing to respond to any further provocations with vigilance and in cooperation with NATO allies, ensuring the protection of national airspace remains uncompromised.
