Romania Declares 2026 “The Year of Nadia Comăneci” to Honour Olympic Legend

Romania’s Parliament has officially declared 2026 as “The Year of Nadia Comăneci,” marking half a century since the gymnast’s historic performance at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The Chamber of Deputies adopted the law with overwhelming support, making this tribute a national priority for the coming year.

Celebrating a National Icon

Nadia Comăneci, born in Onești in 1961, is widely regarded as one of the most influential athletes in the history of gymnastics. At just 14 years old, she stunned the world by becoming the first gymnast ever to score a perfect 10 at the Olympic Games. Her performance in Montreal, which included seven perfect scores and three gold medals, remains a defining moment in sports history.

Comăneci’s legacy extends beyond her Olympic triumphs. She added two more gold medals at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and, after retiring, became a global ambassador for gymnastics, coaching, commentating, and supporting charitable causes. Her story of resilience and excellence has inspired generations in Romania and around the world.

Nationwide Program of Events

The new law assigns the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee the task of coordinating a comprehensive calendar of sporting, educational, and cultural events throughout 2026. These initiatives will be shared with national authorities and Romanian diplomatic missions abroad, ensuring that Comăneci’s legacy is celebrated both at home and internationally.

Central and local public authorities, sports institutions, and organisations representing national minorities are encouraged to organise events highlighting Comăneci’s achievements and the values she represents. Public institutions may allocate funds to support these activities, while national broadcasters are invited to produce and air special content dedicated to the Olympic legend.

Promoting Romanian Values and Global Recognition

The decision to dedicate 2026 to Nadia Comăneci is not only a celebration of her accomplishments but also a strategic move to promote the importance of sports and physical education in Romania. Lawmakers emphasise that this initiative will enhance the visibility of Romanian athletes and reinforce the country’s commitment to excellence, discipline, and national pride.

As the world prepares to mark 50 years since Comăneci’s perfect 10, Romania invites citizens and the international community to reflect on the enduring power of her legacy—a legacy that continues to inspire new generations to reach for greatness.
