Romania: Nicușor Dan Confirmed as President

Romania has officially entered a new political era as Nicușor Dan’s victory in the presidential election was validated by the Constitutional Court. The decision, announced in a plenary session, confirms that Dan, an independent and pro-European candidate, is now the country’s head of state after a dramatic and closely watched electoral contest.

Nicușor Dan’s ascent to the presidency marks a turning point for Romania. Formerly the mayor of Bucharest and a respected civic activist, Dan secured the presidency after a tense runoff against George Simion, the leader of the nationalist Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR). The final tally gave Dan a decisive edge, with nearly 54% of the vote, signalling a strong mandate from the Romanian people.

The election was widely seen as a referendum on Romania’s direction—whether to continue on a pro-European path or pivot toward nationalist, Eurosceptic policies. Dan’s victory, achieved after a surge in support following a pivotal televised debate, was celebrated by thousands on the streets of Bucharest, waving Romanian and EU flags to display unity and hope for the future.

Constitutional Court Validation

The Constitutional Court’s validation process was thorough and unanimous. After reviewing the electoral process and ensuring that all constitutional and legal provisions were respected, the Court declared the election valid and Dan’s mandate as president official. The decision is final and binding and has been published in the Official Gazette, paving the way for Dan’s inauguration and the start of his term.

Nicușor Dan struck a conciliatory and forward-looking tone in his first address as president-elect. He thanked his supporters and reached out to those who did not vote for him, inviting all Romanians to participate in building a better country together. Dan emphasised the need for patience and resilience, acknowledging the challenges ahead but expressing confidence in Romania’s ability to overcome them.

Dan’s platform centres on reinforcing the rule of law, combating corruption, and strengthening Romania’s ties with the European Union and NATO. He has also pledged continued support for Ukraine, positioning Romania as a reliable regional partner.

International Reactions

World leaders were quick to congratulate Dan on his victory, highlighting its significance for Romania and European stability. Messages of support came from across the continent, reflecting hopes for a renewed commitment to democratic values and regional cooperation.

On the other hand, the United States did not offer congratulations, except for an official statement from the US Embassy in Bucharest. Yet, there was no “congratulations for your win” or any other similar expression to make Dan understand that the US relies on him or the country.

With the Constitutional Court’s validation, preparations are underway for the official swearing-in ceremony, after which Nicușor Dan will formally assume the presidency’s powers and responsibilities. His administration is expected to focus on forming a stable government with a broad parliamentary majority, advancing reforms, and restoring public trust in Romania’s democratic institutions.
