Romania: Socialists’ Leader Marcel Ciolacu Resigns, Turmoil in PSD

Marcel Ciolacu, the leader of Romania’s Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the country’s former prime minister, has officially resigned, leaving the party in significant turmoil.

On May 19, 2025, Ciolacu announced his resignation as PSD party leader, which he formalised on May 20 during a National Political Council meeting. He confirmed that he would not run for any position in the upcoming internal party elections and pledged to support a colleague for the leadership role.

Despite stepping down, Ciolacu respected the democratic process and congratulated candidates who advanced to the presidential runoff, emphasising that PSD would not contest the election results, despite the narrow margin.

The resignation has intensified political instability in Romania, with the ruling coalition fracturing and the far-right gaining momentum in the presidential race. The National Liberal Party has already shifted support to the independent candidate Nicușor Dan for the runoff, while PSD has chosen neutrality.

Marcel Ciolacu’s resignation as PSD leader marks a critical juncture for Romanian politics. It reflects the fallout from the presidential election defeat, the collapse of the governing coalition’s unity, and growing uncertainty over Romania’s political future.

The PSD now faces internal leadership renewal and redefining its role amid a shifting political landscape.
