Roxana Minzatu Becomes First Romanian as Executive Vice President of European Commission

Roxana Mînzatu has made history by becoming the first Romanian to serve as Executive Vice President of the European Commission, a significant achievement for Romania since its accession to the European Union. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced on September 17, 2024, during a press conference detailing the new commission’s structure.

Mînzatu will oversee the portfolio of “People, Skills, and Preparedness,” which encompasses crucial areas such as education, quality jobs, and social rights. This portfolio is particularly impactful as it manages approximately one-fifth of the EU budget, translating to around €235 billion.

Mînzatu’s responsibilities will include leading initiatives related to the European Pillar of Social Rights and establishing a Union of Skills to enhance workforce capabilities across member states.

Ursula von der Leyen expressed her confidence in Mînzatu’s abilities, stating, “Roxana will focus on areas essential for uniting our society.” This role positions Romania as a key player in shaping policies that affect millions across Europe.

At 44 years old, Mînzatu brings extensive experience in public service and European integration. She holds a degree in Political Science from the University of Bucharest and a master’s degree in European Integration. Additionally, she completed a Public Leadership Credential program at Harvard Kennedy School in 2022.

Her career includes roles as Minister for European Funds in Romania’s previous government and as a Member of the European Parliament. Mînzatu has also worked in various capacities to manage projects funded by European resources and has been involved in public administration since her university days.

Mînzatu’s nomination came after a strategic shift from Romania’s initial candidate, Victor Negrescu. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu opted for Mînzatu following von der Leyen’s call for increased female representation within the Commission.

Roxana Mînzatu’s appointment as Executive Vice President of the European Commission is a landmark event that underscores her professional qualifications and Romania’s evolving role within the EU. As she steps into this vital position, her leadership will shape education and social rights policies across Europe, further solidifying Romania’s influence within the EU landscape.
