Opinion Poll: 76% Romanians Do Not Want Romanian Army to Fight in Ukraine

76% of Romanians believe that Romania should not be militarily involved in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. That’s what statistics show in a recent poll made by CURS (Center for Urban and Regional Sociology), at the national level, between March 2-11, 2022. On the other hand, 81% of the Romanian population agrees to receive refugees from Ukraine.

In the context of the conflict in Ukraine and the influx of refugees into Romania, a survey was conducted on the opinion of Romanians regarding the situation in Ukraine and refugees.

The results of the poll

According to the opinion poll, 95% of the interviewed Romanians are updated with the news on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Still, a significant proportion (79%) don’t agree with Russia’s action to invade Ukraine, and also think that Romania’s role in this context should remain militarily neutral. Also, 68% of respondents agree that Romania should support the sanctions decided by the EU against Russia.

Many respondents stated that Romania should help Ukraine by sending only humanitarian aid and not military aid, not to get involved in a conflict with Russia. However, only 19% of Romanians believe that Romania should send soldiers to fight to help Ukraine.

The survey was conducted on a sample of 1172 respondents aged 18 and over, between March 2 and March 11, 2022, with a maximum error of +/- 3%.

This poll shows that most Romanians do not want Romania to become militarily involved in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This is not something that Romania could decide, though, as, being a NATO member, the country does what the NATO decides. The country has just prepared a draft law to allow NATO to coordinate the country’s forces in a ‘state of crisis’.

However, Romanians are more concerned about rising market prices, especially fuel and energy. The problem in the current period will be for Romania to find solutions to avoid or lessen a possible financial crisis. Without ceasing to help refugees, Romania should focus more on issues of economic interests, which unfortunately aren’t few.
