Violent Agitators Hijack Romanian Farmers’ Protest Outside Government Headquarters

A protest organised by Romanian livestock farmers outside the Government headquarters in Bucharest descended into violence on Tuesday, September 15, after groups of agitators infiltrated the demonstration and clashed with riot police.

The farmers had gathered in Victory Square to protest restrictions on live-animal exports and the authorities’ handling of livestock disease outbreaks. Their economic demands were soon overshadowed by confrontations involving people whom farmers’ representatives said did not belong to their organisations.

Violent demonstrators forced their way through police lines, threw stones, bottles and other objects at officers and attempted to enter restricted areas near Victoria Palace. Riot police responded with tear gas and removed aggressive participants from the crowd.

The unrest also spread beyond the confrontation with law enforcement. At least two journalists were assaulted while covering the protest, according to information released by Bucharest Police.

Initial official figures indicated that 30 violent participants had been taken to police stations. The number subsequently rose to 47 as authorities continued identifying and questioning those involved. One participant was detained after police allegedly found a knife in his possession.

More than 20 people reportedly required medical assistance during the incidents, including demonstrators and members of the security forces.

Farmers Distance Themselves from the Violence

Representatives of agricultural organisations publicly distanced themselves from the clashes and claimed that organised agitators had hijacked their legitimate protest.

Constanța Ștefan, president of the Țara Loviștei Agricultural Association, said the people responsible for the violence were not the livestock farmers represented by her organisation. Other farmers made similar statements, arguing that the agitators had arrived prepared for confrontation.

Romanian media identified football ultras and supporters of pro-Russian former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu among some of the individuals involved in the disturbances. Political figures associated with the radical right were also present around the demonstration.

The violence effectively pushed the farmers’ demands into the background and transformed an economic protest into a major public-order incident.

Romanian Authorities Condemn Attempt to Destabilise the Country

Romanian President Nicușor Dan condemned both the violence and attempts to turn a legitimate demonstration into street fighting.

Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan warned that those seeking to drag Romania towards dangerous destabilisation must understand that nobody benefits when the country is divided through hatred and partisan interests.

Interior Minister Cătălin Predoiu announced that public order had been restored and warned that those who attacked law enforcement officers or violated the law would be held accountable.

Traffic around Victory Square was reopened on Tuesday evening after police regained control of the area.

The incidents are now being investigated by Bucharest Police, which is examining footage from the protest to identify additional participants responsible for assaults, vandalism and other violent acts.
