Romanians turned out in huge numbers to vote for the presidential election

The vote for the Romanian presidential elections reached a record for the first round, as Romanians turned out in huge numbers to vote for the presidential election. For the first time ever, there were more than 9,4 million voters to express their option, both in the country and abroad. This record was favored by the new electoral law, according to which Romanians from Diaspora have 3 days to vote. This brought more than 652,000 votes from abroad, which is a record.

Also, there were more than 8,8 million votes cast by the Romanians in the country, which is a surprise after a presidential campaign who offered almost nothing and, most important, it offered no debate before the best positioned candidates.

The official exit polls, for the votes cast in the country, show the following situation:

  • Klaus Werner Iohannis 39% – actual president, supported by National Liberal Party
  • Viorica Dancila 22,5% – social democratic candidate, supported by the Social Democratic Party
  • Dan Barna 16,4% – supported by the Union Save Romania

These percentages might change, as the votes cast abroad are not yet measured by the exit polls.

We’ll get back with the official results tomorrow.
