Hundreds of Romanians Gather in Protests Against Lockdown Measures

On Friday, May 15, the first day of relaxation from lockdown measures in Romania, hundreds of Romanians gathered in front of the Government building waving national flags and asking for the resignation of the Prime Minister Ludovic Orban. They protest against the Romanian Government and against the drastic lockdown measures imposed by the authorities during the last two months.

Romanian authorities imposed the most authoritarian regime in the European Union during the COVID-19 lockdown measures. Romanian police issued more than 200,000 fines with a total value of more than USD 90M. The value of individual fines reached USD4,500 in some misdemeanor cases, clearly showing the police abuses against population.

The protesters accused the Government of taking unnecessary measures which destroyed the economy. Also, they are asking for evidence to prove that COVID-19 epidemic really needed lockdown measures to be stopped.

In Romania the state of alert replaced the state of emergency starting from Friday, May 15.
