IRES, the Romanian Institute for Evaluation and Strategy conducted a survey regarding the changes which occurred in Romania during pandemic. The study showed a mistrust of Romanian people in authorities, except for one public personality: Raed Arafat, the founder of Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication (SMURD) and one of the key communicators during pandemic.
The most interesting facts from the survey:
- 6 out of 10 Romanians think their Government hid information regarding COVID-19. The deceased and unreported patients from Suceava, one of the COVID-19 hospots, but also the failure of the Government in communicating properly with the people, conducted to this conclusion. The Liberal Government also lost more than 10% of confidence among population since the beginning of the pandemic and it is definitely on a descending trend. Also, the questionable medical acquisitions and the regular activity of the suppliers (one supplier operating a tavern in a village) cast a shadow over the real intentions of the Liberal Party, who came to power just a few months
- Only 25% of the people trust PM Ludovic Orban. This is one of the lowest confidence levels of a PM in Romania after the 1989 Revolution. This is a normal consequence of the way Mr. Ludovic Orban failed to communicate with Romanians, he preferring for the other ministers or secretaries of states to do the communication in his place. Also, his indecision in taking firm measures from the very beginning of the epidemic in Romania contributed to his poor public image among population.
- Raed Arafat, the secretary of state, enjoys more than 75% confidence among Romanians. The Syrian-born Romanian succeeded in getting this confidence only during this pandemic, but mostly in the past, along his medical career or in the public service as secretary of state.
