The Guardian: Romania, one of the top alternative destinations for 2020

The Guardian published a list of 20 travel destinations which celebrate inspiring conservation and community projects that are making a difference to people and the planet. They are ethical destinations, each one standing out for a specific project, Romania being nominated among other destinations, mostly cities, such as Copenhagen, Gothenburg or Roterdam, but also countries, such as Slovenia.

Romania is praised and recommended by The Guardian for its bears, bisons and biodiversity.

You don’t have to fly to southern Africa to go on safari – Romania is one of the best places in Europe to see large mammals in the wild. The country has seven million hectares of forests – a significant proportion is ancient virgin woodland – and is home to the continent’s largest populations of brown bears, as well as wolves and lynx.

Also, Andrei Blumer, the president of the Association of Eco-Tourism in Romania offered a clearer picture of what is happening in Romania in terms of eco-tourism: “There are challenges but ecotourism is growing organically here and lots of small-scale ethical businesses are opening, using local guides and produce, with the money staying in the community”.

Romania remains one of the hidden gems of Europe in terms of unknown destinations and activities to be done in a holiday, but publishers like The Guardian or CNN Travel reveal some of these to their readers.
