Polidin, the Most Successful Romanian Immunomodulator, to Be Produced Again

Polidin is the most successful Romanian immunomodulator of all time. The bureaucracy and the lack of funding, some would say the intentional destruction of this brand altogether, lead to the stoppage of the production in 2012. Now it is its revival chance: Polidin is to be produced once again in Romania as decided by the authorities.

Cantacuzino Institute was founded in Bucharest 100 years ago, on April 1, 1921. The institute was meant to develop in four main directions:

  • production of vaccines and sera
  • supporting and directing Romanian public health centers
  • scientific research
  • training of microbiology and immunology specialists.

Polidin was invented by Cantacuzino Institute in 1966 and it was produced until 2012. Now the management announced it is to be produced once more. This is the chance for the Institute to be placed on the map of the famous European producers once more.

For the time being, Polidin is to be produced as gummy bears and nasal spray. Later on, it could be decided to be also produced as a solution for injection, as it was once commercialized. The current decision is meant to attract the younger generation for buying the product.

The decision, if implemented soon, could be a solution for boosting the immunity of its users, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies conducted on Polidin showed it enhanced the immune response to various infections.

Basically, immunomodulators are substances that can help support immune function by modifying the immune system’s response to a threat. In this context, there are voices that claim Polidin could’ve fought better against the pandemic, by boosting the immune system of the population, than the vaccination itself.
