NATO Secretary General appoints Mircea Geoană as next Deputy Secretary General

Former PSD chairman and de facto winner of 2009 presidential election, Mircea Geoana, was appointed deputy secretary-general of NATO. This is the highest position held by a Romanian in an international organization.

The announcement was made by Stoltenberg on Twitter. “I am pleased to announce the appointment of the experienced state man and diplomat Mircea Geoana as the next NATO Deputy Secretary-General. I am grateful to Rose Gottemoeller for the remarkable service to the Alliance.” wrote the Secretary General on Twitter.

Stoltenberg also publishes a short biography of Mircea Geoană, about which he writes that he is the founder and president of ASPEN Romania, that he served as president of the Senate, but that he was also Foreign Minister and Ambassador of Romania to the United States of America. Mircea Geoana will take office in mid-October.
