Documentary about Ilie Nastase, “NASTY”, Selected for Cannes Festival

“NASTY,” the documentary about the life and career of the Romanian tennis player Ilie Năstase, was included in the selection of the 77th edition of the Cannes International Film Festival, one of the most important cinematographic events in the world. The film, directed by Tudor Giurgiu, Cristian Pascariu and Tudor D. Popescu, can be watched in the Special Screenings section. The Cannes Film Festival will occur between May 14 and 25, News.ro reports.

It is extraordinary that NASTY was selected this year at Cannes. In France, Ilie Năstase is as loved as in Romania. Including the documentary in the selection of the festival is a recognition of our teamwork and proof that you can be selected at Cannes with a film that is not necessarily in the auteur cinema area. It is a step forward and towards the international distribution of the film, I hope it will be seen all over the world. I gave the news to Ilie, and he was pleased.

Tudor Giurgiu on NASTY being selected for Cannes

One of the most acclaimed film festivals in the world, Cannes brings hundreds of international stars to the red carpet to present their latest films. Among this year’s guests are the filmmaker George Lucas, who will be honoured for his entire career; the Canadian director Xavier Dolan, who will be the president of the Un Certain Regard jury; the director and screenwriter Greta Gerwig, the president of the competition jury, or the actor Kevin Costner.

“NASTY” tells the story of Năstase’s career and influence on tennis. Personalities such as Rafael Nadal, Björn Borg, Jimmy Connors, Stan Smith or Phil Knight (the founder of Nike) talk about the Romanian in the documentary.

The documentary had its national premiere on April 16 at the Sala Palatului in Bucharest. Over 3000 spectators and guests watched the film together with Ilie Năstase. Ion Ţiriac, Boris Becker, Nadia Comăneci, and Gheorghe Hagi were among the special guests.
