Premiere: Military Exercises with HIMARS Rocket System in Romania

Between June 8-10, at the National Anti-Aircraft Training Center “General Ion Bungescu”, in Capu Midia polygon, shootings with the HIMARS system took place for the first time for the Romanian Army. The system entered the endowment of the 8th Operational Tactical Missile Brigade “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” in 2021.

Here is a video, courtesy of the Romanian Ministry of Defence, showing the Romanian Army shooting exercise in the Black Sea region:

The shootings took place on the sidelines of the “Unirea 22” and “Viforul 22” exercises, carried out by structures from the 8th Alexandru Ioan Cuza Tactical Operational Missile Brigade based on a fictitious scenario, which aimed to practice techniques, tactics and procedures for ensuring the fire support of a group of forces carrying out the coastal defence operation.

For Romania, achieving the capability of indirect fire support is a vital security interest. It contributes significantly to strengthening the strategic partnership with the United States of America and fulfilling the commitments assumed by the country within NATO. Multiple missile launch systems, an essential part of the ground artillery system, operate independently or integrated with other systems to carry out missions. Due to the interoperability character, the multiple missile systems launched can be made available to NATO to fulfil the commitments assumed by Romania in the Alliance and the regional initiatives. The HIMARS system has proven its operational maturity in actual conflicts, being tested during military operations.
