At least one dead and several injured after the explosion at the largest Romanian refinery, PETROMIDIA. The refinery is situated near the Black Sea, in Navodari. The group where the refinery belongs to had a turnover of more than 1 billion USD in the first quarter of this year.
The explosion occurred on Friday, July 2, around 12.15 local time, within the premises of the refinery, at the oil diesel hydrofining installation, and it was immediately followed by a large fire that was put out by the local firemen.
Two of the injured are in serious condition and they were immediately transported to hospitals in Bucharest, while the other two are treated in Constanta, the county where the refinery is situated.
Petromidia refinery belongs to Rompetrol Rafinare, whose majority shareholder is KazMunaiGaz, a company controlled by the state of Kazakhstan.
The effect of the explosion was also felt on the stock exchange. The shares of the company dropped 10% of the value, but they recovered some value after the fire was put out.
An investigation is undergoing and the prosecutors investigate the cause of the explosion and the conditions which led to the incident.
