Amazon Development Romania – a succes story

US online retailer Amazon has surpassed Alphabet, Google’s parent, as a market value, and ranked second in the world’s most valuable companies after market capitalization, according to news agency Bloomberg.

The software development center in Iași of amazon.com was opened five years ago and the number of employees has increased. The new center is located in a new office building of 13,000 sqm in the Palas Iasi real estate project developed by local investor Iulian Dascalu. Amazon’s Iasi Development Center has four departments: Technology Development, Compliance Operations, Retail Services and Digital Imaging, and a total of nearly 1,000 employees.

With the expansion, in Iasi, Amazon could reach at least 1,800 employees, almost double the number it had at the beginning of last year. “We decided to expand the development center in Iasi, primarily due to the advanced level of training that IT professionals in this field have,” said Lucian Vornicu, director of the Amazon Development Center in Iasi. Iasi is considered the Cultural Capital of Romania. Located in the northeast of the country, Iasi is the fourth most populous city and boasts the oldest Romanian university. So far, Iasi is one of the research and education centers of Romania. The Amazon Bucharest Development Center hosts speech and language solutions for Alexa, testing Alexa products, as well as Amazon Web Services (AWS) teams working on key technologies for Elastic Cloud Computing (EC2).

Iasi is not very good in statistics when it comes to income. If we exclude Bucharest, where the average salary is 3,545 lei, Iasi was ranked ninth in the ranking after the average net income. Maybe this is one of the reasons why Amazon chose Iasi, instead of other Romanian city.

According to Amazon employees, the work environment is very pleasant, the salary is very attractive, and most importantly, everything is very well organized. At the same time, the salary is well above the Romanian average, and the work schedule is flexible. Amazon thinks that the best employees who are indispensable to a company are those who want to work for the development of the company.
