Romanian Village Re-elects Deceased Mayor

Romanian villagers decided to re-elect their dead mayor. This happened in Deveselu, a village in Southern Romania, which is famous for hosting the American defense missile system. The mayor, Ion Aliman, died while being infected with COVID-19 on September 17, ten days before the local elections on Sunday.

The authorities didn’t have time to change the ballots and to print new ones. Thus, the villagers decided to vote him, as his name was still mentioned on the ballot.

After the vote some villagers went to his grave to celebrate his re-election. According to them, he was a good mayor and his re-election was like a homage for all he did for them during his term.

In 2008, also in Romania, a deceased mayor was re-elected, but the tragic event happened just after the vote began.

Now, the local elections are to be organized again in Deveselu.
