In recent years, the number of foreign tourists who choose to visit Romania has increased. The tourists are documented, they make their own itineraries, and when they arrive in Romania they visit the country in search of the main tourist objectives they have read on the Internet.

Romania is in the top 5 EU countries in the number of nights spent by tourists. The number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation structures in the European Union exceeded 3.2 billion in 2019, up 2.4% compared to 2018, with the Member States having the strongest percentage growth being Slovakia (12.6%), Lithuania (10%), the Netherlands (6.8%), the United Kingdom (5.7%) and Romania (5.6%), according to preliminary data provided by Eurostat.

The capital remains the main destination in Romania for foreign tourists coming to the country. Bucharest attracts more tourists than the seaside city of Constanța, the mountain city of Brașov, or the western Romania cities of Cluj-Napoca and Timișoara. With its unique past, lively atmosphere and many unique tourist attractions, Bucharest is one of the safest and most accessible destinations in Europe. Tourists passionate about architecture will discover true treasures in this city, starting with the special monasteries built in the unique Brancovian style and continuing with the majestic buildings built in the modern, contemporary style.

The charm of the streets and the historical buildings, the shops, museums, restaurants with traditional food, all of them quickly made the Old Center of Bucharest one of the main tourist attractions.

At the same time, it is foreseen that business tourism will increase by 12% in 2020 in Romania, and last year most business tourists were registered in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Craiova and Iași. The areas of activity that involve the largest number of business travelers are the pharmaceutical, audit, oil and banking industry, and the average duration of a trip in the interest of service is three days.
