Romania ranks second in the top five EU countries with the largest net recipients of personal transfers

Romania ranks second in the European Union according to the inflows of funds through personal transfers, of 3 billion euros in 2018, the largest funds being recorded in Portugal, of 3.6 billion euros, according to data published by the European statistics office Eurostat. Romania would be in second place in the world, in terms of emigration, with 10 million Romanians living far from the country where they were born, being surpassed only by Syria, a country destroyed by military conflicts. The explanation for the positioning Romania in the second place in this hierarchy is the fact that a large number of citizens who emigrated after 2000, as compared to the relatively low one, 1.13 million, of the people who constituted the Romanian diaspora before 2000.

The personal funds transferred to Romania came almost entirely from the EU (2.66 billion), the remaining 316 billion being from outside the EU. Outflows were 172 million euros in the EU and 91 million outside the EU.

Given the remittances from Romania as transfers of personal funds, our country has a surplus of 2.7 billion euros, while Portugal has 3.1 billion and Poland 2.5 billion.
