Mrs. Gabriela Firea, the Bucharest Mayor, announced she wants to take drastic measures for combating air pollution in Romania’s Capital city.
“We have to tackle air pollution, as Bucharest is the 6th most polluted city in Europe! The city center suffers both from car congestion and from air pollution, and we have to do something about it”, Gabriela Firea stated.
She explained her initiative for the old cars, which are not at least Euro-3 compliant, to be forbidden from entering the city center, but also for the Euro-3 compliant cars to pay a pollution tax in order to be let in Bucharest. Euro-4 to Euro-6 cars are to be let without any additional tax in the city center.
According to the City Hall statistics, in Bucharest there are roughly 120 K cars which are not Euro-3, but also 200 K cars which are Euro-3. Besides, In Bucharest metropolitan area there are also 1 M cars which are Euro-4 to Euro-6 and electric.
Bucharest wants to be one of the European cities to tackle air pollution caused by cars by forbidding the entrance of the most polluted cars in the city limits, but also by imposing taxes for the less polluting cars.
