Romania Ranks First at Balkan Mathematical Olympiad for Seniors

Romanian students won six medals and finished first at Balkan Mathematical Olympiad for seniors 2022 in Cyprus.

Romania’s Olympic mathematics team won 6 medals (two gold medals, three silver and one bronze medal) and first place in teams at the 31st edition of the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (BMO) for seniors (4 – May 9, Agros, Cyprus).

The professors coordinating the Romanian team are Catalin-Liviu Gheorghe (team leader) from the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Bucharest and Mihai Chis (deputy leader) from the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of the West University of Timisoara.

Andrei Moldovan (11th grade) and David-Andrei Anghel (10th grade) are gold medalists from Bucharest’s International High School of Computer Science.

Diana Olu (12th grade) and Robert Dragomirescu (11th grade), both students of Bucharest’s International High School of Computer Science, received silver awards, as did Andrei-Giovani Chiriță (10th grade / National College of Computer Science “Tudor Vianu”). The bronze award went to Radu-Andrei Lecoiu, an 11th-grade student at Bucharest’s International High School of Computer Science.

Romania was ranked first among the competing countries based on the sum of individual performances (with a total of 168 points out of 240 possible).

Teams from 15 countries competed in this year’s Balkan Senior Olympics (regional competition), the first in physical format since 2019: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Northern Macedonia, Montenegro, Republic of Moldova, Romania, and Serbia (the Member States with Permanent Status), as well as Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Italy, Kazakhstan, and the United Kingdom (the Member States with Temporary Status) (guests).
