Former Social Democrat Leader Liviu Dragnea Supports a Newly Registered Party: Alliance for the Homeland

Alliance for the Homeland is the newly registered political party that the former Social Democrat Party leader Liviu Dragnea decided to support. The announcement was made in the very first interview he offered after his release from jail.

Alliance for the Homeland – Alianța Pentru Patrie is being registered by former political associates Liviu Dragnea had while in power. Among them, his former secretary-general, Codrin Stefanescu, is the most visible.

Liviu Dragnea was sentenced to jail for corruption-related crimes. He spent 2 years and 2 months behind bars and was released on parole on July 15th. He is forbidden to be elected, but he is not forbidden from supporting a certain political party.

Alliance for the Homeland hopes to gather around the new political party all those leftists disappointed by the direction the country goes towards. Also, Alliance for Romania is expected to attract all those social-democrats disappointed by the way the Social Democratic Party – PSD is lead during the current context.

To the disappointment of all his members, during the current political crisis, the main Opposition party, PSD, avoids overthrowing the liberal Government by initiating a no-confidence motion. Political pundits suspect a secret alliance between the governing party, PNL – National Liberal Party, and the main Opposition party, PSD. The goal of this alliance is to keep the PNL in power, such as to avoid the growth of the reformist party USR-PLUS.

The registering of Alliance for the Homeland is expected to be announced in the following days by Codrin Stefanescu, former political right hand of Liviu Dragnea while he was the leader of PSD.
