Anniversary Whiskey for 1981 Royal Wedding between Charles and Diana To Be Auctioned in Bucharest

The whiskey bottled in 1981 on the occasion of the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, as well as a rare Moët & Chandon champagne from 1953, are to be auctioned in Bucharest.

The Collection Champagne, Whiskey and Wine Auction is approaching, the first in this category since 2024—some genuinely remarkable bottles of drinks. It is worth mentioning the participation in the event of a special edition produced by the Macallan brand: “Royal Marriage Malt Whiskey – Long Life and Happiness,” intended to commemorate the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. The drink was made and bottled in 1981, on the occasion of the famous marriage on July 29.

This whiskey was brewed from two vintages, from 1948 and 1961, representing the birth years of the newlyweds in the British Royal Family. Founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer who was also a teacher, Macallan was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to receive a legal licence. The name comes from the Gaelic word “magh”, meaning “fertile land”, and the added ending, “llan”, recalls a monk named St. Fillan, who had a close connection with the church on which the distillery grounds are located.

The drink has, in the international centers that still sell it, a label that says over 11,500 euros, so the starting price in this auction is attractive: only 3,500 euros. Macallan also launched a limited edition in 2011 dedicated to the marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, using a combination of the productions from the birth years of the two brides and grooms: 1996 and 1999. Only 1,000 bottles were made then.

Also remarkable is this William Larue Weller Kentucky Bourbon, from 1920, which is therefore over 100 years old. The drink has been rebottled in a crystal decanter and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. The starting price in this auction is only 300 euros.

Also, the Auction of Champagne, Whiskey and a Collection of Wines, which this time will also take place with a physical presence at the Cesianu-Racoviță Palace, will not only be an online event proposes a tasty collection of famous labels from the famous Saint-Émilion wines, but also other famous Bordeaux, to the Land of the Rising Sun with its famous Suntory whisky. The auctioned selection does not lack champagne bottles that have written history (Dom Pérignon Vintage, Bollinger) and new arrivals in the guild (Fleur de Miraval).

Among the lots in high demand in such events is the Moët & Chandon champagne from the 1960s, which has a starting price of only 75 euros, and 1953, having a starting price of 300 euros, but also the set of three bottles of Macallan Glenlivet (1937/1938/1939) bottled by Gordon and MacPhail, which has a starting price of €5,000, as well as Graham’s bicentenary anniversary cabinet, containing two verticals of Port wine (from 1963-2011 and 1961 -2006) – which explains the hundreds of years of history of Graham’s wine, having a starting price of 15,000 euros (relative to a list price almost double).
