Romanian Permanent Electoral Authority: Romania will implement e-vote system by 2024

Romanian Permanent Electoral Authority issued an official statement according to which by 2024 Romania will have implemented the e-vote system.

The news comes not only as a strong intention of respecting the EU recommendations regarding the implementation of the e-vote in all the European countries, but also as a solution for the Romanian Diaspora which in the past found it hard to wait in many-hour-long-queues to express the vote.

Romania would be the second country in the EU to implement such a system, after Estonia. E-vote will allow citizens to vote over the internet, no matter which country they found themselves in during the voting day.

2024 would be an important moment, as that year Romanians will be waited to vote in three different rounds of elections: parliamentary, local and presidential ones.

The most uttered concern is for the e-voting system to be hacking-proof, so as to offer confidence for the voters. In Romania the current election rounds don’t offer 100% confidence to the voters, as many Romanians think that Romanian authorities can interfere in the election process by using the electronic counting software offered by the Special Telecommunications Service.
