Orange Romania will merge with the former Romtelecom. The news is not recent, and the intention of Orange Romania to take over the former Romtelecom is known. But, the surprise came from the participation of the Romanian state in the new entity.
The mobile operator Orange Romania announced on Friday, December 29, the merger with the former Romtelecom, which specialized in landline communication. The state approved this, as this merger practically created a monopoly in the landline communication market.
Today is a significant day for Orange Romania, and signing this agreement will strengthen our position in the Romanian market and bring us closer to being a fully converged telecom operator for our residential and business customers. I want to thank the Government, Romania, our key partner, and our involved teams for this achievement.
Mari-Noëlle Jégo-Laveissière, Executive Vice President, CEO of Orange in Europe
Following the merger between the two operators, the Romanian state will hold 20% of the new entity’s shares through the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitalization. The Romanian state gains a lot from this merger, which is essential for the economy.
We are really pleased to announce the conclusion of such a strategic agreement for Orange Romania, which marks a crucial moment in the company’s history and confirms the confidence of the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitalization in our strategic ambitions, in the project and the team. With united forces, we now accelerate towards fulfilling the common goal: to be the first option for fixed-mobile services in Romania.
Julien Ducarroz, CEO, Orange Romania.
The completion of the transaction is expected in the first half of 2024, but no official announcement or official date has been advanced from this perspective.
