After the UK and the South-African variants, the Brazil variant was also identified in Romania. Two patients from Bucharest, one who has identifiable contacts, the other who doesn’t, are the first to be confirmed with the Brazilian COVID-19 variant.
What does it mean? Is the Brazilian variant more contagious? Does it pose additional risks to the population? In fact, it is and this is the risk with this one: Brazil variant is the most dangerous variant from all these, because it is highly contagious.
Recent study shows that AstraZeneca vaccine could be effective against this strain. Currently, AstraZeneca vaccine generate the most adverse reactions to people who were injected with it. Still, if it would prove efficient against the Brazil variant, public perception regarding it would definitely change.
As for today, Bucharest has already entered the red scenario, with restaurants and theaters closed, and schools only partially open. Moreover, the vaccination rhythm in Romania is to be accelerated, but the country has already taken the second position in the EU by the percentage of people immunized with the second dose of vaccine.
