The medical specialists from Anadolu Medical Center presented the latest innovative oncological treatments

Anadolu Medical Center was established by the Anadolu Foundation in 2005 and has two major characteristics: its non-profit status and its unique affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine USA, recognized worldwide.

“For fifteen years we have been battling cancer without giving back. We understand that a cancer diagnosis is difficult, especially when the patients have to travel to a foreign country for treatment. We are native speakers of Romanian, with an understanding of Romanian culture, ready to help our co-patriots 24/7.” said Dr Inge Aivas, Medical Manager of Anadolu Medical Center.

Anadolu Medical Center treats patients all over the world

Currently, Anadolu Medical Center welcomes patients from over 65 countries worldwide. Anadolu Medical Center allows patients to feel welcomed in a foreign country.

The Romanian team from Anadolu Medical Center includes 15 patient coordinators and translators who are with patients at every step, as well as a personal nurse and a Romanian language coordinator. The Alliance for Quality in Medical Purpose Travel (MTQUA) ranked Anadolu Medical Center in the Top 10 Global Hospitals in 2019.

Interventional oncology in the treatment of liver cancer

Although cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, the US National Center for Health Statistics has stated that cancer death rates have declined since the 1990s. However, unlike lower death rates for most cancers, liver cancer death rates increased by 2% per year, from 2007 to 2016, becoming the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States in time, which are endemic in some countries, including France, Italy and Romania.

The first line of therapy for primary liver cancers and colorectal metastases in the liver is the surgical resection of the metastases. However, due to the number, size and location of the lesions, as well as the patient’s performance status, only about 20% of patients are eligible for the operation.

Alternatively, liver tumours can be destroyed by minimally invasive techniques, such as ablation or embolization, in the field of interventional oncology. Interventional oncology is an emerging subspecialty that offers tumour treatments under the guidance of radiological imaging, such as computed tomography, ultrasonography, angiography. As a first-line treatment in many liver tumours, it offers lower risk, less pain and less recovery time compared to open surgery. Moreover, interventional oncology can improve life`s quality and could be curative in cases diagnosed in a timely manner.

High standards regarding Interventional Oncology

The quality of interventional oncology services depends on the skills and facilities required. With dedication and a proven commitment to quality and safety, the Anadolu Medical Center’s Interventional Oncology department was registered as part of the IASIOS (International Accreditation System for Interventional Oncology Services) pilot stage, a global initiative.

All oncological interventions are performed by interventional radiologists, certified by the European Council for Interventional Radiology (EBIR). Sophisticated imaging – with the additional use of special software, navigation / robotic systems – plays an essential role in determining the stage of cancer, preoperative planning, monitoring the effect of treatment, and monitoring disease recurrence.
