Deadly Floods Ravage Eastern Romania

At least four people have died in eastern Romania as severe flooding continues to impact the region following torrential rainstorms that began on the night of September 13, 2024. The floods have primarily affected the counties of Galați and Vaslui, where floodwaters reached heights of up to 3 meters, leaving hundreds stranded and prompting extensive rescue efforts.

Emergency services have mobilized over 700 personnel, utilizing boats and helicopters for evacuations. By Saturday afternoon, more than 250 individuals had been rescued from flooded areas.

Flooding has affected 19 localities across eight counties, with significant damage reported in Galați, where approximately 5,000 households have been impacted. Strong winds have also caused trees to fall, damaging vehicles and obstructing roads.

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has cancelled other engagements to visit the affected areas and coordinate relief efforts.
