On January 17, 2025, Romania’s National Defense Ministry reported a significant breach of its airspace due to a Russian drone attack on Ukraine. This incident unfolded in the early hours, with monitoring systems detecting the violation as Russian forces resumed drone strikes aimed at civilian and port infrastructure in Ukraine, particularly near the Romanian border in Tulcea County.
In response to the detected drone activity, two F-16 aircraft from the Romanian Air Force were dispatched to monitor the situation. Residents of Tulcea County received alerts through the Ro-Alert system around 1:39 AM, informing them of potential dangers.
The Romanian Defense Ministry confirmed that the drone attacks targeted areas close to Romania, leading to heightened security measures. Following the initial detection, ground teams conducted searches and discovered signs of a possible drone impact site near the village of Plauru. This area is notable as it experienced a similar incident in October 2023 when another Russian drone fell nearby, creating a crater in the vegetation.
The Romanian authorities secured the new site and initiated investigations involving specialists from various defence and intelligence agencies.
A proposed law in Romania would allow air defence systems to initiate attacks against foreign drones that breach national airspace.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the violation of Romanian airspace, labelling Russia’s actions as irresponsible and contrary to international law. This incident underscores ongoing tensions between NATO member states and Russia, particularly as drones frequently cross into Romanian airspace during attacks targeting Ukraine.
The situation remains under close observation as investigations continue into the implications of these breaches for regional security.
