Romania to Invest EUR 9 B for Cernavoda Nuclear Plant

Romanian PM Ludovic Orban announced that Romania plans to continue the refurbishment of Reactor 1 from Cernavoda Nuclear Plant, but also to build two new reactors: Reactors 3 and 4. The investment needed is 8-9 billion Euros, as mentioned by the PM.

We have big plans for this nuclear plant. Our objective is to invest around 8-9 billion Euros for revamping Reactor 1, but also for the building of the Reactor 3 and Reactor 4. Since we took the political power, we have changed the approach: we want to accomplish the investments along with the serious partners from the Euro-Atlantic region, partners who have the expertise and the technology to support the accomplishment of these fundamental investments for our future economic development.

The mentioning of the Euro-Atlantic partners for accomplishing the investment is not random. This year the Romanian Government, who holds through the Ministry of Energy 82% of the shares from Nuclearelectrica, the owner of Cernavoda Nuclear Plant, has given up the potential partnership with China General Nuclear Power Corporation.
