Romania Declares State of “Epidemiological Alert” Amidst Rising Flu Cases

Romania has declared a state of “epidemiological alert” due to a significant increase in flu cases, marking a critical phase in the country’s response to the outbreak.

Health Minister Alexandru Rafila announced this measure, emphasizing that while the situation is unprecedented, it is not yet dramatic enough to warrant restrictions such as quarantines or isolation measures. Instead, the focus remains on protective recommendations to mitigate the spread of the virus.

The declaration comes as flu cases have surged nationwide, with over 4,100 cases recorded last week alone, nearly doubling from the previous week. This increase has increased concerns about the strain on Romania’s healthcare system, particularly in regions like Bucharest, Cluj, and Brasov. Despite the rising numbers, Rafila has reassured the public that economic and social activities will continue uninterrupted, with schools resuming normal operations without suspensions or shifts to online learning.

Health officials are urging citizens to take preventive measures seriously, including vaccination. Over 1.1 million flu vaccines have been administered this season, highlighting the importance of vaccination as a key defence against severe flu complications.

The Ministry of Health monitors the situation closely and advises the public to remain vigilant and adhere to public health guidelines to help control the outbreak.
