Iran’s reported launch of two intermediate-range ballistic missiles toward Diego Garcia should end one of Europe’s most comfortable illusions: that this war is far away, containable, and strategically separate from the continent itself.

Whether the missiles hit their target is not the central issue. The issue is that a threshold was crossed. A capability was demonstrated. A message was sent. And that message was not aimed only at Washington, London, or military planners in the Gulf. It was aimed at everyone still pretending that distance is protection.

If Tehran can launch at roughly 4,000 kilometres today, only a fool would build policy on the assumption that 5,000 kilometres is somehow out of reach tomorrow.

Romania’s President Nicușor Dan chose reassurance over reality

This is what makes President Nicușor Dan’s recent declarations look less like calm leadership and more like strategic frivolity.

He said Romania was completely safe and under no direct threat. That kind of absolute language is politically convenient, but it is also dangerously fragile. It sounds firm for a news cycle, then collapses the moment reality outpaces the statement. And reality has moved fast.

The problem is not that a president should avoid panic. Of course, he should. The problem is that he chose the rhetoric of certainty in a security environment defined precisely by uncertainty. When missile range expands, when escalation spreads, and when European capitals are openly discussed within strike distance, the responsible language is caution, preparedness, and deterrence, not blanket comfort.

Romania is not outside the new threat range. But no other capital city is!

Romania cannot speak about itself as if it exists outside the strategic geometry of this war. It is a NATO state on the eastern flank. It hosts critical allied infrastructure, such as the infamous Deveselu rocket site. It matters militarily, geographically, and politically. That alone makes it relevant. Add the fact that Iran has now demonstrated a much longer reach than the one it spent years publicly normalising, and the old language of “no direct threat” begins to sound unserious.

No, that does not mean Romania is about to be hit tomorrow, despite Iran’s recent threats that it considers Romania an aggressor. It means Romania is no longer entitled to the fantasy that this is someone else’s problem.

NATO protection is real, but it is not magic

NATO is not a miracle shield that makes geography disappear, missiles vanish, or escalation politely stop at the Alliance’s frontier. It is a military deterrent structure, not divine intervention. If a longer-range strike ever pierced Europe’s defences, the first reality would not be communiqués or treaty language, but destroyed infrastructure, burning airports, shattered energy facilities, paralysed logistics, mass panic, and cities thrown into emergency mode within minutes.

Bucharest, Warsaw, Berlin, Paris or Rome would not look “safe” in that moment simply because they belong to NATO. They would look like modern capitals hit by the failure of deterrence. NATO can retaliate, contain, and raise the cost of aggression to catastrophic levels, but it does not mean that no missile can fly, no building can fall, and no civilian population can be forced to live through the first hours of devastation.

There is another lazy reflex in European political communication: invoking NATO as if the very mention of the Alliance eliminates danger. NATO matters. American presence matters. Missile defence matters. Collective defence matters. But deterrence is not the same as invulnerability.

A country can be defended and still be threatened. It can be under the NATO umbrella and still sit inside an adversary’s strike logic. Serious leaders understand this distinction. Weak leaders blur it because the second version is easier to sell domestically.

That is exactly why phrases like “Romania is safe” should be treated with scepticism when the actual strategic environment is deteriorating in real time.

Europe has run out of geographic excuses

The deeper issue is European complacency. For too long, Europe has behaved as if danger only becomes real when it arrives physically, visibly, and unmistakably on European soil. Until then, every escalation is treated as regional, external, manageable, somebody else’s problem.

That mentality is now collapsing. A 4,000-kilometre launch is not only a military event. It is a political event. It forces Europe to confront the shrinking distance between conflict zones and European vulnerability. It destroys the comforting fiction that the continent can remain merely an observer while the surrounding arc of instability expands.

No one in Europe is safe any longer in the old psychological sense of the word. That is the real shift.

The most dangerous lie is false certainty

The most irresponsible thing a European leader can offer at a moment like this is not caution. It is false certainty.

Citizens do not need theatrical panic. But they do need adult language. They need to hear that the world has changed, that security assumptions are being rewritten, and that comforting slogans are not a strategy.

Iran’s longer-range launch should be read as a warning shot to European political thinking as much as to military planners. And in that context, Nicușor Dan’s confident assurances already look obsolete.

Because once a regime demonstrates that Europe is within reach, the debate is no longer whether the continent is “safe.” The debate is whether its leaders are serious enough to admit that it is no longer.

Romania woke up in Iran’s crosshairs today. The Islamic regime in Tehran has fired off an unprecedented warning to Bucharest — and the message could not be more chilling.

The Islamic government in Tehran warned Romania that providing its bases to the US Air Force amounts to direct participation in the attacks against Iran — and they want the world to know it.

The threat dropped like a bomb on Monday morning, straight from the podium of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei warned Romania it would face political and legal consequences if it allowed the United States to use bases on its territory for operations against Iran.

His words were blunt, cold, and deliberate.

“If Romania provides its bases to the United States, we will give an appropriate legal and political reaction. Romania will be considered a participant in military aggression against Iran, and this action is completely unacceptable from the point of view of international law,” Baghaei declared.

Translation? Romania is now on Tehran’s list.

How Did We Get Here?

The first three KC-135 Stratotanker-type aircraft touched down in Romania on Sunday, March 15, along with a contingent of US soldiers. Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruță confirmed the arrival, stating the planes carried no weapons or explosives on board and that Parliament had capped their numbers.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan — who approved the American request following a Supreme Council of National Defence meeting — insisted the equipment was strictly “defensive” and carries no munitions.

But Iran isn’t buying it.

Romania — A Bullseye on the Map?

Defence analysts warn that Romania’s involvement raises the national security stakes to an unprecedented level and puts the country on Iran’s map of potential retaliatory strike targets.

And it’s not just talk. Iran is said to possess the technical military capabilities to influence Romania and Moldova, especially given the region’s geopolitical context.

Romania is not alone in this dilemma — but it has made a bolder choice than many of its allies. While Bucharest said yes to Washington, other European nations took a very different path.

Deveselu: Romania’s Shield Against Iranian Missiles

Here is where the story takes a crucial turn — and where Romania holds a card most people forget.

Deep in southern Romania, in the small town of Deveselu in Olt County, sits one of NATO’s most strategically vital installations: the Aegis Ashore missile defence system. Operational since 2016, the base was built for exactly this kind of moment.

The Deveselu shield is designed to intercept ballistic missiles launched from the Middle East — Iran being the primary threat scenario NATO planners had in mind from day one. Armed with SM-3 interceptor missiles, the system can track, target and destroy incoming ballistic threats long before they reach Romanian soil or penetrate deeper into NATO’s eastern flank.

In plain terms: if Tehran were ever reckless enough to fire missiles toward Romania or its NATO allies, Deveselu would be the first and most formidable line of defence standing in the way.

The base doesn’t just protect Romania. It serves as a protective umbrella for Bulgaria, Hungary, and the broader southeastern flank of the Alliance — a region that has never been more exposed than it is today. NATO military planners have long described Deveselu as a cornerstone of European missile defence architecture, a steel ceiling over Eastern Europe against precisely the kind of threat Iran now represents.

Iran has always despised Deveselu. Tehran has repeatedly condemned the base as a provocation, calling it an aggressive move disguised as defence. Now, with Iranian missiles already flying across the Middle East, those complaints have transformed into something far more sinister — open threats against a NATO member state.

Romania’s answer, however, is already in place. It stands 150 metres tall, pointed skyward, ready.

The Stakes Couldn’t Be Higher

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed on Monday that Tehran has not requested a ceasefire and will continue to resist — without hesitation. The regime is in full war mode, and it’s lashing out at every country it sees as enabling its enemies.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry also confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz has not been closed, but that ship traffic is moving under special conditions, as Iranian armed forces control passage through the waterway — a chokepoint for global energy supplies that affects every European nation, including Romania.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned that reopening the Strait of Hormuz would “not be easy,” as the UK and its allies scramble to put together a collective plan to restore freedom of navigation.

What Comes Next for Romania?

Bucharest has planted its flag firmly in the American camp — and now it must live with the consequences. President Dan has reassured Romanians that there is nothing to fear. But with Iranian missiles flying across the Middle East and Tehran threatening anyone who dares help America, the question on every Romanian’s lips is the same:

Are we safe — or have we just made ourselves a target?

The answer, for now, points south — toward a small town in Olt County, where NATO’s shield stands watch over the night sky.

Iran’s attack on Israel on Saturday, April 13, made analysts think it’s another war starting in the Middle East. But, in our opinion, it is not yet a war but a massive drone attack.

Hundreds of drones and missiles attacked Israel for five hours straight. Still, the Iron Dome, the defence system of the IDF, helped by the US fighters in the area, successfully intercepted, destroyed and annihilated 99% of the drones, according to official communication. Only a few injuries were reported on the Israeli territory, but no deaths. Reports are yet to come, though.

Iran announced to the UN that it had stopped the attack, and that was it. They will refrain from further strikes if not provoked. Meanwhile, the US advised Israel not to retaliate to this attack, but Israel’s decisions are independent and sometimes unpredictable.

The risk of escalating the conflict is high. If Israel decides to retaliate after their War Cabinet meeting at 15:00 local time is over, then it will be a more significant conflict in the Middle East. If Israel decides to focus on the Gaza Strip, then this is only a massive drone and missile attack.

The conclusion is simple: Iran had to attack as a reply to Israel’s attack on their embassy in Damascus. It was mostly a display of Iran’s power in aerial attacks. Also, they had to show to their allies in the Middle East they had the power to attack Israel and to “punish” the aggressor without causing much harm, such as to avoid provoking Israel’s military power.

However, the Iranian kamikaze drones didn’t take a significant toll. A few injuries are reported, and that would be it—a good show for their citizens and allies in the Middle East, but not a military hit.

On the other hand, if Israel considered this as the beginning of a war with Iran, the officials wouldn’t have waited until 15:00 to meet and discuss what happened, let alone decide if they would retaliate or not. The war would’ve begun so far, and the world would have witnessed one of the greatest super-conflicts.

It is not yet the case, and this is not (yet) a war. The ball is in Israel’s court. Hopefully, a favourable decision for peace in the region will be taken.

A Lebanese – Belgian citizen, considered a significant financer of the Hezbollah militant group, was arrested on Friday in Bucharest upon arriving at the airport. A $10 million reward had been offered for any tip on his whereabouts.

According to US authorities, Mohammad Ibrahim Bazzi, 58, listed as a “global terrorist” by the United States in 2018, has funnelled millions of dollars to Hezbollah over the years.

U.S. Attorney Breon Peace in Brooklyn said the extradition of Bazzi and 78-year-old Lebanese national Talal Chahine was sought based on the charges in an indictment handed down last month in federal court in Brooklyn.

“Mohammad Bazzi believed he could secretly move hundreds of thousands of dollars from the United States to Lebanon without being detected by law enforcement,” Peace said in a statement. “Today’s arrest proves that Bazzi was wrong”.

Charges against Bazzi and Chahine include conspiracy to determine US individuals to conduct illegal transactions with a global terrorist and conspiracy to commit money laundering. According to the press release announcing his arrest, Romanian law enforcement authorities detained Bazzi after he arrived in Bucharest on Friday.

Authorities said Bazzi and Chahine conspired to force or induce a US person to liquidate some real estate in Michigan and covertly transfer hundreds of thousands of dollars of the proceeds from the US to Bazzi and Chahine in Lebanon.

The men were caught in recorded conversations suggesting numerous ways to hide from US officials that Bazzi was the source and destination of the sale proceeds and that the men were involved, authorities said.

Hezbollah is a political and paramilitary organization initially established to fight against the Israeli occupation of Lebanon. His armed wing is considered stronger than Lebanon’s army, and it has, according to some estimations, more than 100,000 fighters. It has been involved in conflicts worldwide, from training militias in Syria and Iraq to fight ISIS to supporting Muslims in Europe and the Middle East.

Mainly funded by Iran, interested in harassing the Israeli army, Hezbollah, or The Party of Allah, it is now considered, entirely or only its military wing, a terrorist organization by the European Union and other states worldwide.

Romanian Anti-mafia Department, DIICOT, seized the largest quantity of drugs that have ever been captured in Romania. According to the press release, EUR 45 million heroin has been discovered in containers coming by sea from Iran.

The seizure took place in Constanta harbor, the largest Romanian gate to the Black Sea. The containers were supposed to contain only construction materials, but the purpose was only to disguise the heroin transport.

Heroin coming by sea from Iran seized in Constanta, Romania

Precisely, 1,452 kilograms of heroin were hidden in the containers. The destination of the drugs was not Romania, but countries from Western Europe. Romania remains a transit country for the drug lords, especially for the Black Sea’s exit and its membership in the European Union. This facilitates the drug carriers the transport of the drugs towards the Western countries.

Romanian police forces arrested 9 persons involved in this case, after an investigation started in June 2020.

The death of the Iranian judge Gholamreza Mansouri, who was in Bucharest under the judicial supervision of the Romanian authorities, generated diplomatic tensions between Iran and Romania.

The Iranian Prosecutor General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri has asked his Romanian counterpart, Mrs. Gabriela Scutea, to launch a serious investigation into the death of fugitive Iranian judge Gholamreza Mansouri in that country, as reported by Tehran Times on Monday. The Iranian authorities consider that their Romanian counterparts haven’t fulfilled their job in extraditing the fugitive in due time and this favored his death.

On top of that, the Romanian ambassador in Iran was summoned to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he was informed that the Iranian part waits for immediate investigation of the death of Gholamreza Mansouri, especially because he was under Romanian authorities’ supervision when the tragic event occured.

In their turn, Romanian authorities summoned the Iranian ambassador to the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was officially informed that the Romanian authorities are investigating the death of Gholamreza Mansouri and the result of the investigation will be communicated to the Iranian authorities through the official channels.

We remind our readers that on Friday, June 19, former Iranian judge Gholamreza Mansouri died from falling in a Bucharest hotel where he was accommodated while waiting the sentence for his extradition. He was accused in Iran for bribery.

UPDATE 6/21/2020: Sources claim the police have studied the CCTV with the recordings from the moment of the death and unofficially confirmed the suicidal gesture of the former Iranian judge Gholamreza Mansouri. According to the same sources, the police is now investigating the CCTV recordings so to identify any interaction between the former judge and any of the hotel guests or hotel staff before he jumped from the 5th floor of the stairwell. The result of the autopsy is to be received on Monday.

UPDATE 20.00: The body of the former senior Iranian judge Gholamreza Mansouri was found in the lobby of DUKE Hotel Bucharest. His death occurred instantly, as he fell to the ground from high above the staircase. As the incident happened within the premises of the hotel, the moment of his death could have been recorded by the CCTV of the building. Also, there could be witnesses from the hotel personnel, the same who called the emergency number announcing the Iranian judge’s death.

Initial news: Fugitive former senior Iranian judge Gholamreza Mansouri was found dead in Bucharest, in the hotel he had been accommodated in, after hotel staff called the police on the emergency number 112. The position of his body suggests he committed suicide by falling.

The case is investigated by Bucharest Police Department. They have to clear up the circumstances of the Iranian magistrate’s death.

Gholamreza Mansouri was under judicial supervision. He had been accused by the Iranian authorities to have taken $500,000 in bribe. He was arrested in Romania at the Iranian authorities’ request and appeared in front of the Romanian court on June 12.

As he invoked the possible mistreatment in Iran if he had been extradited, the Romanian court ordered Romanian authorities to verify if human rights would be respected in Iran following his potential extradition. The next court hearing had to take place on July 10. Until this date, Gholamreza Mansouri was under judicial supervision, free, but not being allowed to leave Romania until court would give a sentence.

So far, Bucharest Police Department offered no details regarding the investigation.

In a very documented post, Politico tries to compare the end of the communism in Romania with the current situation in Iran. Is this a too far fetched comparison from Politico’s journalists? Not at all, if we carefully read the article, as the history seems to be repeating, at least up to a certain point.

Are there any resemblances between the two regimes and situations? Let’s analyze along with Politico the irony and the strange coincidence of it all..

The events which led to the Romanian Revolution from 1989 found Ceausescu in an official visit to…Iran. This is the first coincidence. At that time, in Romania there were speculations about the true nature of his visit, starting from “Ceausescu wanted to hide his gold in Iran” to “Ceausescu asked Iranian mercenaries to help him keep the power”.

The truth about his visit in Iran is more simple than some might believe: he was officially invited during this year and, while no other president wanted to welcome Ceausescu, while no president was hurrying to visit the Iran president, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. Ceausescu simply accepted the invitation and was welcomed as an honored guest in Tehran. A few days later he was ousted from power and executed in Romania, following his return to the country.

The supreme clerical leader of Iran during Ceausescu’s official visit in 1989 was…Ali Khamenei, the same supreme leader as nowadays. After the embarrassment Iran diplomacy suffered for receiving Ceausescu, Khamenei was the one who cleared up the mess and calmed down the hot spirits, making a call for unity over the national debacle over Ceausescu’s visit.

Politico says the resemblance of the situation from the Communist Romania and cleric Iran is striking. Then, Ceausescu had Securitate, the most feared East-European state security force. Now, Khamenei has the Revolutionary Guards. Securitate had control over the economy, exports, imports and strong currencies, Revolutionary Guards have power over border traffic, including merchandise and goods, but also fuel and drugs. Ceausescu was hated by its people, who demonstrated against him, now the Iranian people took to the streets to ask for “death for the tyrant”.

Will Khamenei have the same end as Ceausescu? Politico says it’s not the only option to end the crisis:The Romania scenario for Iran is not inevitable, but it would be prudent to prepare for it.

What will happen? Only future will tell.

After the killing of the top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani in an airstrike in Baghdad, Iran swore revenge and threatened America with a military counter strike. In reply, Donald Trump posted on its Twitter page the following message: “Iran never won a war, but never lost a negotiation“. This one is, more than certainly, intended to ask Iran to step forward for negotiations and to calm down the Arab world.

In the end, it might be only a war fought between diplomats, but who knows?

Will the killing of gen Qasem Soleimani escalate the conflict and start a war?

People are already talking about World War III, but Trump has stated he stopped a war through the military airstrike and didn’t have the intention of starting one. On the other hand, the Iranian officials swear revenge and talked about military retaliation.

When comparing the two military powers, it is clear for everybody that the USA has the upper hand; it is so not because the USA is part of a bigger military alliance, namely NATO, but because the Americans have the biggest firepower in the world in terms of military equipment and personnel. On top of that, yes, they are also part of NATO.

Also, according to some sources, Iran doesn’t have nuclear weapons, though Iranians have enriched uranium for more than a decade. Iran was also imposed international economic sanctions and, on top of that, its nuclear enrichment program, which Iran always stated to be used only for civilian purposes, was repeatedly struck by Stuxnet computer virus and the killings of top Iranian nuclear scientists.

It is hard to predict if Iran will actually start a war against the USA, but we think there are little chances for such a thing to happen.

Will the European Union be protected in case of a war?

Even if there are little chances for a war to begin in the future, as a traditional and strategic partner of the USA, European Union should be concerned about its safety. Besides, EU comprises 28 member states, most of them member of NATO, and if a war begins, these countries will be directly involved in fighting Iran and protect the European territories.

Also, within EU there are countries which hosts American defense shields, such as Romania and Poland. Both have active anti-missile shields on their grounds, active and ready to defend the European soil from any threat, including an Iranian attack.

When establishing the anti-missile shield in Romania, in Deveselu village, the Americans officially argued the defense system is for protecting the Europe cities against an Iranian attack, and not set to retaliate in case of a Russian threat. It means the 800 million USD military system should live up to its promises, right?

In any case, war or peace, the European Union countries will fight united for protecting their soil, their troops and their democratic values against any threat.
