Corvinul Hunedoara is the biggest surprise of this year’s Romania Football Cup. On Wednesday, Romanian 2nd league side Corvinul Hunedoara won the Romania Cup and will represent the country in the 2024-2025 season of the Europe League.
The controversy around Corvinul Hunedoara is that the team was supposed to play in the next season of Romania’s Liga I, the premier league in the country, as the club ranked second in League II. They don’t have the right to play in the first league but will have the right to play in the European Cup.
Corvinul was the underdog in the final played versus Otelul Galati, but they managed to draw 2-2 at the end of the 90 minutes played in Sibiu Arena. After the two extended halves didn’t change anything, the penalties were the ones to offer the winner.
Corvinul Hunedoara is the team where Mircea Lucescu, the famous Romanian football coach, started his career. The club’s former glory vanished after the 90s and entered a shadow until this year.
The last Romanian team to have this performance and win the Romania Cup while playing in the second league was Rapid Bucharest, 49 years ago.
