Poll: 70% of the Romanians Are More Concerned About the Collapse of the Economy than About COVID-19 Pandemic

70% of the Romanians are more concerned about the collapse of the economy than about the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Romania, shows a poll conducted by Romanian poll agency, CURS.

So far, Romania has around 11,000 infected patients and around 600 deaths. It means that, with a population of about 20,000,000 people in the country, here also counting the hundreds of thousands of Diaspora members who returned to the homeland in the last months, Romania simply has an infection rate of only 0,055% from the whole population.

From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Romania reported 10 deaths per day, in average. In the same time, there is a daily average of 115 deaths caused by cigarette smoking. Does anybody forbid smoking because of this statistic?

How bad is the collapsing of the Romanian economy?

While the Romanian Government imposed drastic lockdown measures, the Romanian economy is clearly collapsing. The latest data showed in Romania there are 1 million workplaces suspended or terminated and tens of thousands of companies which suspended their activities.

Also, 270,000 Romanians asked for the banks to allow them to postpone the monthly bank installments, a procedure allowed under the emergency situation in Romania for a period of up to 9 months.

Moreover, in March alone, there was a decrease with more than 25% in budget revenues and the budgetary deficit has doubled. Romanian officials say they projected a deficit of around 7% at the end of the year, but the reality seems pretty far from this figure.

On top of that, the Romanian economy perspective was downgraded by Moody’s, from stable to negative.

Is it bad enough? It is, indeed.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Party, which is the governing political force blames the Social-Democrats who preceded them in power for the current economic crisis. But this lame excuse doesn’t put the economy back on track and it seems that the Romanian Government doesn’t know how to do it. Romanian PM announced the country allotted only 3 billion Euros for restarting the economy, while the entrepreneurial associations asked for 30 billion Euros or 15% of the GDP.

As always, while the politicians postpone the restarting measures, the Romanian entrepreneurs will have to find their own ways in order to survive and to save their companies and, by doing so, to save the Romanian economy.
