Romanian PM: I Regret We Can’t Protect Our Doctors With Adequate Clothing

As compared to a month ago, Romanian PM speech changed dramatically. While, at the end of February Mr. Ludovic Orban, called for calm and asked the citizens to trust Romanian medical authorities regarding the measures taken to prevent COVID-19 epidemic in Romania, now he admits his Government can’t offer adequate protection to the doctors and nurses in hospitals.

In a speech he delivered on Wednesday, Ludovic Orban admitted his Government is overwhelmed by the need of protective clothing and medical masks for the hospitals and he regretted he couldn’t provide this sort of protective gear. Also, he tried to blame his failure on the shortage of such materials on the international market.

Despite his regrets, hundreds of medical staff has got infected with COVID-19 because of the lack of medical masks and protective clothing. Also, many hospitals, including the once praised by the very Romanian president, Suceava hospital, entered quarantine and therefore put pressure on the other units from the Romanian medical system.

On the other hand, Romanian Opposition blamed the Governing party for the delay in taking the necessary measures for combating the spread of COVID-19 in Romania. If the authorities had taken the necessary measures from January, when the WHO issued a warning, the situation would have been different.

At the moment, the situation in Romania is critical, after dozens of doctors choose to resign because the authorities are not able to provide them with protective clothing, thus lots of them getting infected.
